Bridging Heritage and Technology in an Upcoming International Workshop
The Exploring Visual Cultures (EVC) network, in collaboration with TUM-XR, is thrilled to announce an International Artist Workshop hosted by Ebenezer Kow Abraham during his Independent Studies in Drawing class at the Department of Art Education, University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Ghana. This virtual event marks a vital intersection of traditional art forms and cutting-edge digital technology, bringing together global perspectives on creative reclamation and digital pedagogy.
The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, 21st July 2026. Please note that the virtual room will open early for our drawing studio session starting at 09:15 AM GMT via Zoom.
Featured Facilitator: Ayuko Onoue
We are honoured to welcome Ayuko Onoue, a brilliant Japanese creator, WebAR engineer, and traditional papercut (kirie) artist based in Munich, Germany. Ayuko’s practice uniquely bridges the delicate, tactile world of traditional craftsmanship with the immersive possibilities of Web Augmented Reality (WebAR).
Workshop Theme: "RETURN, RETRIEVE, RISE: My Sankofa journey through paper cut and AR"
The workshop is themed "RETURN, RETRIEVE, RISE: My Sankofa journey through paper cut and AR." Rooted in the Ghanaian Akan-inspired philosophy of Sankofa, the essential act of reaching back to fetch what has been left behind, this session will explore how indigenous and traditional visual cultures can be preserved, subverted, and revitalised through modern digital storytelling.
Integrating this experience directly into the Independent Studies in Drawing curriculum offers students a profound look at how papercut art and core drawing principles are transformed into interactive augmented reality experiences, pushing the boundaries of contemporary art education.
