Stefan Eisenhofer PhD, Ethnologist and Historian, Chief Curator of the Departments Africa South of the Sahara (since 2001) and North America (since 2016) in the Museum Fünf Kontinente Munich (formerly Staatliches Museum für Völkerkunde München = State Museum of Ethnology Munich).
He has published many books and articles and has curated numerous exhibitions on African arts and history, amongst others "Rituals, Artists, Kings. Tradition and Modernity in Southern Nigeria" (1997), "Tracing the Rainbow – Arts and Life in Southern Africa" (2001), "Genocide Monument – An Installation of the Ghanaian artist Kofi Setordji" on genocides in Africa and the world, "Stille Post [i.e. chinese whisper] – Angelika Böck and Hans Himmelheber" (2004) on varying traditions concerning portraiture and perception in Europe and Western Africa, "Black Gods in Exile – Photographs of Pierre Fatumbi Verger" (2006), “Football: One Game – Many Worlds” (2006), “Last Rites Nigerdelta. The Drama of oil production in contemporary photographs” (2011), and “Daughters of Life – Photographs by Angèle Etoundi Essamba” (2018).
Stefan Eisenhofer is lecturer at the Institute of Art History at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (University of Munich) and is working especially on the arts of pre-colonial West African kingdoms, on contemporary arts in Africa, on the reception of African sculpture in the Western World as well as on the "fetish" and "fetishism" in European understanding.
