ChriseldaDeng KayaMojaProject 2

Kaya Moja is a socially driven design initiative that focuses on creating sustainable, functional, and culturally inspired handbags while empowering communities and promoting environmental responsibility. The name Kaya Moja, meaning “one home,” reflects the vision of unity across Africa and the idea that design can bring people together while improving livelihoods and protecting the planet.

The project was created to address two major challenges: environmental pollution caused by non-sustainable fashion materials and the limited economic opportunities available to many local artisans. Kaya Moja seeks to demonstrate that fashion and design can be both beautiful and responsible. By focusing on sustainability and community empowerment, the initiative aims to reduce waste, promote ethical production, and support inclusive economic growth.

Kaya Moja is rooted in African communities, particularly those rich in traditional craftsmanship and natural resources. The project draws inspiration from local culture, materials, and skills, ensuring that its products reflect African identity while serving both local and global markets.

The initiative emerges at a time when the global fashion industry is increasingly being challenged to adopt sustainable practices. With growing concerns about climate change, environmental degradation, and social inequality, Kaya Moja positions itself as a forward-thinking response to the urgent need for ethical and sustainable design solutions.Kaya Moja focuses on designing and producing high-quality handbags made from locally sourced natural materials like rattan, leather, recycled materials, gourds, metals, reeds, and durable fibers. These products combine modern aesthetics with traditional craftsmanship, resulting in functional, durable, and stylish accessories that highlight sustainability and cultural heritage.

The project operates by collaborating with local artisans, sourcing eco-friendly materials, and using thoughtful design processes that prioritize durability, minimal waste, and aesthetic value. By blending innovation with traditional techniques, Kaya Moja creates products that are environmentally conscious while providing income opportunities and skills development within communities.

Chriselda

I am Chriselda Deng, a passionate designer whose journey began in interior design and later evolved into product design. My curiosity about the elements that bring spaces to life led me to explore the creation of products. I believe that thoughtful design goes beyond aesthetics; it should enhance human well-being, function beautifully, and tell meaningful stories about culture and place. My work is driven by a desire to design spaces and products that are both functional and inspiring. In 2023, I was honored to be part of the team that won Young Interior Designer of the Year at the Africa Interior Design Week, a continental competition that recognized innovative emerging designers. This achievement strengthened my commitment to excellence and creativity. Through my work, I strive to design products and environments that enrich everyday living while contributing to a more thoughtful and sustainable design future.
